A bit about me

There's a certain hunger some people have that forces them to read, research, experiment and stay awake until the late hours searching for answers. It's not a choice, it's a need as basic as food, water and sunlight. Have you ever had midnight roll around, and never mind work the next day, you keep going? Is there something, maybe just one thing, that really gets you fired up? The rest of the world may not "get it", but you don't care because you "get it", and that's all that matters. I believe this is the definition of passion, and I also believe there's nothing more important in life. Passion transcends topic, subject, and all other boundaries. It's what drives us to accomplishment and personal fulfillment.

San Francisco

I recently made the biggest move of my life, from Orlando, FL to San Francisco. This was in large part motivated by an opportunity to work for one of the coolest companies ever, Vertigo Inc. Also I'm very lucky to have the chance to experience this amazing city with my beautiful girlfriend, Megan Hopkins (@orlandotechnuts) who moved here as well for her own opportunities. We both love touring nearby Sonoma and Napa Valleys (working on our wine snobbery), wandering around the city, and we recently visited the amazing Monterey Bay. I've found that the people here are distinctively friendly and there seems to be a culture of intelligence and innovation. Being a true geek at heart it is very exciting to be so close to Silicon Valley and Mountain View and I'm finding that the engine of entrepreneurship is alive and well here. I'm looking forward to meeting many of the brilliant folks that are literally creating ideas and building businesses every day.

Science Nerd

What are some of the things that get me fired up? There is nothing quite as awe inspiring to me as the understanding of our universe that we can learn from modern physics. The insights revealed by quantum mechanics and relativity tell us that many of the assumptions about our world that we hold intuitive and indisputable are incorrect. Probability waves, double slit experiments and the relative nature of time and space simply don't fit into our "normal" view of how things are supposed to work. I love reading books by Brian Greene, Michio Kaku and I am lucky enough to have met Neil DeGrasse Tyson in person!

Computer Geek

My full time passion is software engineering and I have to say, I consider myself truly lucky that I have been able to make a career out of it. I'm still amazed sometimes that people are willing to pay me to program. Hell, I did this for years at home for free! There's nothing quite like that feeling at 3:00am when all the pieces fit together and all that code finally does EXACTLY what you knew it would! It's satisfying, it's exciting, it's a wow moment! At my awesome day job I work as a Senior Software Engineer for the amazing Vertigo Inc. in Point Richmond, CA. It is here that I work with an amazing group of extremely intelligent people developing very cutting edge projects. My specialized areas of interest are in the realm of HMI, like Windows Touch and Microsoft Surface, and Machine Learning. I am very excited about the startup culture here in the Bay Area and I am looking forward to meeting people and helping change the world.

Traveling, Camping, And Jumping Out Of Airplanes

When I'm not busy getting in touch with my inner nerd, I love traveling and enjoying the great outdoors. The greatest trip I've taken to date was a month in New Zealand in 2007 with International Student Volunteers. I spent several weeks working on restoring beautiful Motuihe Island and the remainder touring the country, including Auckland, down to Rotorua, across the fairy to Picton, and all the way down to Queenstown. I bungeed 3 times, Zorbed, went 4 Wheeling and met some of the most amazing and memorable people along the way. Much closer to home I have been sky diving over the Kennedy Space Center, backpacking on the Appalachian Trail (not the whole trail, not even close!) and Yosemite, and hiking in the breath taking Sequoia National Park. I've found that you feel the most alive when you're scared to death. If you don't understand, go jump off a bridge... literally!
